Frequently Asked Questions
Can this tool crack a PDF password?+
No. This tool only removes the password from a PDF you can already open. If you do not know the password, the tool cannot help — that is by design.
Does this work on all encrypted PDFs?+
It works on standard password encryption: RC4 (40- and 128-bit) and AES-128 and AES-256, including the newer AES-256 format (revision 6) that current Acrobat and qpdf write. Files protected with certificates (public-key security) or with DRM plug-ins are not supported and show an error. Tested on October 12, 2026 with files encrypted by qpdf 11.9 (AES-256, AES-128, RC4-128, owner-only): each came back unencrypted, passed qpdf's check and kept its text.
Is my PDF or password uploaded?+
No. The PDF is loaded into your browser memory, decrypted with the password you provide, and re-saved without encryption — all locally. Nothing leaves your device.
Why remove a password?+
Common reasons: the password is no longer needed for this copy, you want to combine it with other PDFs, your archive system does not support encrypted files, or you received a protected file and the sender has authorized you to store it unprotected.
Do I need the password to unlock the PDF?+
Yes — you need the user password to unlock a PDF. This tool removes encryption from PDFs you legitimately own; it cannot crack unknown passwords (which would be a violation of computer-misuse laws in most jurisdictions).
What about PDFs with only owner-password restrictions?+
The tool detects them: a PDF that opens without a password but carries an owner password (blocking printing, copying or editing) is marked OWNER PASSWORD, and a Remove restrictions button saves an unencrypted copy with no permission limits. No password is needed, because those restrictions only work when software chooses to honour them. Remove them only from files you are entitled to change.
Is unlocking a PDF legal?+
Yes, for PDFs you own or have the rights to. Removing encryption from documents you don’t own (or don’t have permission to modify) may violate copyright, DMCA §1201, or computer-misuse laws — know the rules before acting.
Does unlocking re-encode the document?+
No. The PDF is decrypted and the same document is saved without encryption: page content, fonts and images are carried over unchanged rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and searchable and pages keep their size. In our test every page's content stream was byte-for-byte the same as in the original. The file around the pages is rewritten, so its size changes slightly, and a digital signature, if the file had one, will no longer validate.
