How to use it
- Type your first guess, then tap each letter until its colour matches the game: grey, yellow or green.
- Add each further guess the same way. The list shows every five-letter word that still fits all of them, with words that appear often in ordinary English first.
- Under Good next guesses, pick a word that splits the remaining possibilities best, or one marked ✓ that could itself be the answer.
How it decides which words still fit
The helper does not try to turn colours into rules; it replays the game. For every candidate word it scores each of your guesses as if that word were the answer, using the game’s colouring: letters in the right place turn green first, then other letters turn yellow only while the answer still has an unmatched copy of that letter, and everything else is grey. A word stays on the list only if it reproduces every colour you saw. That handles repeated letters correctly: if you guessed SPEED and only one E lit up, words with two Es are ruled out.
Which words, and in which order
The candidates are the 8,636 five-letter words in ENABLE, a public-domain English word list. That is far more than any daily puzzle uses, so the list is ordered by how often each word appears in ten classic public-domain novels: 2,732 of them appear at least once and come first, and the rest are dimmed. The game’s own answer list belongs to its publisher and is not used here.
Good first and next guesses
A guess is good when its possible colour patterns split the remaining words into many small groups. The helper scores a guess by the average number of words you would be left with afterwards (the sum of each group’s size squared, divided by the number of words). Scoring every one of the 8,636 words as a first guess against all of them took about a minute on our test machine; the best were LARES (about 186), RALES (about 188), TARES (about 196), ARLES (about 197), NARES (about 201) words left on average. Against only the 2,732 common words the best were ARLES (about 53), LARES (about 54), RALES (about 55), TARES (about 56), RATES (about 58). After your first guess the helper re-scores up to 600 likely words against what remains.
What we tested
On October 15, 2026: the page’s colouring matched a separate Python implementation on 30,000 random word pairs, a third of them with repeated letters. In 300 simulated games with random answers and one to five random guesses, the page’s list was exactly the set of words consistent with every guess, and always included the answer. In Chromium, CRANE scored as grey for every letter left 1,036 words; adding SIGHT and EERIE by tapping the tiles to their true colours for the answer LIGHT left eight words, LIGHT among them, matching the brute-force set.
