Tip Calculator

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill total and a tip percentage, or tap one of the preset percentages.
  2. To split the bill, enter the number of people. To tip on the amount before tax, enter the tax from the receipt and tick the box.
  3. Choose a round-up if you want whole-dollar amounts; the calculator shows what percentage the rounded tip comes to. The table below compares other percentages for the same bill.

How it calculates

The tip is the bill (or the bill less tax) times the percentage, in whole cents and rounded to the nearest cent with half a cent rounding up. Splitting divides the total in whole cents and hands the leftover cents to some people, so the shares never differ by more than a cent and always add up to exactly what is owed; a plain division would show $39.33 three times and come out a cent short of $118.00. Rounding each share up to a dollar multiplies that dollar amount by the number of people and treats the difference as tip.

What we tested

On October 14, 2026 we checked the page’s own functions against exact fractions on 5,005 random bills with and without tax, every rounding option and splits of 1 to 12 people: every tip, total and share matched, and every set of shares added up to the total (2,215 of the splits did not divide evenly). In Chromium: 20% of $86.40 showed $17.28 and $103.68; with $5.65 tax and tip before tax it showed $16.15; $100 at 18% split three ways showed $118.00 as one share of $39.34 and two of $39.33; rounding each share up showed $40.00 each and a $20.00 tip (20.00%); the six-row comparison table rendered; an empty bill showed a message; the page fitted a 390 px phone with no errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a tip?+
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage: 20% of $86.40 is $86.40 × 0.20 = $17.28, for a total of $103.68. A quick mental shortcut for 20% is to move the decimal point one place left and double it: $8.64 × 2 = $17.28.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?+
That is your choice; the calculator does either. Tipping on the pre-tax amount means the tip is calculated on what the meal cost, not on the tax: on an $86.40 bill that includes $5.65 tax, 20% before tax is $16.15 instead of $17.28.
How do I split a bill evenly?+
Add the tip, then divide the total by the number of people. When it does not divide evenly the calculator gives the extra cents to some people: $118.00 split three ways is $39.34 for one person and $39.33 for two, which adds up to exactly $118.00.
What does rounding up each share do?+
Each person pays a whole number of dollars and the extra goes to the tip. Three people splitting $100 with an 18% tip pay $40 each, which makes the tip $20, or 20%; the calculator shows the effective percentage.
