How to make a meme
- Pick a layout: classic text over the picture, a caption bar on top, two pictures side by side or stacked, or four panels.
- Upload your picture (or several for the panel layouts).
- Type the top and bottom text, or the caption. Add extra text boxes and drag them into place if you need them.
- Download a PNG or JPG, or copy the image and paste it where you want it.
How the text is fitted
Classic meme text is white with a black outline so it reads on any picture, light or dark. The tool wraps your words to the width of the panel (with a small margin) and then picks the largest size, starting from about an eighth of the panel width, at which every line fits and the whole block takes no more than a third of the panel’s height. Top text hangs from the top edge and bottom text sits on the bottom edge, so a short punchline gets big letters and a long one wraps onto more lines instead of running off the picture. The outline is a fixed share of the letter size, so it stays proportional when the text shrinks. Our first test run found that a 60-letter single word still overflowed a narrow panel at the smallest size; words that long are now broken across lines.
What we tested
On October 14, 2026 we drove the tool in Chromium: every layout, text from one to forty words in each position, and long single words, checking that every line stayed inside its panel and reading the downloaded files with Pillow.
| Check | Result |
|---|---|
| Text-fit cases (5 layouts, 2 picture shapes, 8 texts, every position) | 304 text blocks |
| Lines wider than their panel | 0 |
| Text blocks outside their panel | 0 |
| Smallest size used | 13 px |
| PNG download | 1000x750 px, 103,307 bytes |
| JPG download | 1000x750 px, 84,306 bytes |
| Outlined text present | 32,976 white and 23,218 black outline pixels in the top band |
| Caption bar | grows from 1035 to 1260 px tall for a longer caption |
The page fitted a 390 px phone screen with no errors.
Using pictures responsibly
A meme is still a picture of something or someone. Use your own photos or images you are allowed to use, and think twice before putting words in a real person’s mouth.
