How to use it
- Enter an amount and choose the year it is from and the year to compare with; the calculator works in either direction, so it can also show what today’s money would have been worth in the past.
- Switch to By month for a specific month, such as a price from June 1985 compared with September 2026.
- Read the equivalent amount, the total change in prices and the average yearly inflation over the period.
How it calculates
Equivalent value = amount × CPI in the target period ÷ CPI in the starting period. The index is the BLS Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted, with 1982–84 = 100; the table in the page was generated directly from the BLS time-series data file, 113 annual averages and every published month from January 1913 to September 2026. The average yearly rate is the total change spread evenly as compound growth: (CPI ratio)1/years − 1. October 2025 has no published value in the BLS series.
What we tested
On October 14, 2026 we checked that every value in the page’s table equals the BLS file it came from, and compared 4,003 random conversions (annual and monthly, forwards and backwards) with exact fractions: all matched to the cent, and the missing month is reported. A version that divided the indexes the wrong way round failed every case. In Chromium: $100 in 2000 showed $186.96 in 2025 (prices up 87.0%); $1 in 1913 showed $32.52; $100 in 2025 showed $53.49 in 2000; by month, June 1985 to September 2026 showed $313.14; choosing October 2025 explained that BLS published no value; the page fitted a 390 px phone with no errors.
| Amount and years (annual average CPI-U) | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| $100 in 2000, in 2025 dollars | $186.96 |
| $100 in 1970, in 2025 dollars | $829.75 |
| $1 in 1913, in 2025 dollars | $32.52 |
