Why Community Guidelines Matter

Community guidelines define your platform’s culture. They tell users what behavior is expected. Unlike Terms of Service (legal contracts), guidelines are conversational and focus on values and norms. Good guidelines reduce moderation burden, protect your community from toxic behavior, and protect your business from liability. Every platform with user interaction needs them.

What to Include

Cover: respectful communication (no harassment, threats, hate speech, personal attacks), content standards (no spam, illegal content, plagiarism, misinformation), authenticity (no impersonation, fake accounts), IP (respect copyrights and trademarks), privacy (don’t share others’ personal information), and commercial activity (self-promotion and advertising rules). Moderation and Enforcement

Define enforcement transparently. Escalation path: first violation (warning), repeated (temporary suspension), severe (permanent ban). Document actions for consistency.

Legal Considerations

Reference guidelines in your Terms of Service so violations are contractually enforceable. Include update clauses. Consider age restrictions and parental consent for minors.
