How to make random teams
- Paste the names, one per line (up to 500): a class register, a sports squad, workshop attendees.
- Choose how to split: a number of teams, or the most people you want on any team. The line under the box tells you the sizes you will get.
- Make teams, then Shuffle again for a different split, Copy teams to paste them into a message, or Print.
How the split works, and what we checked
The tool shuffles the whole list with the Fisher–Yates method, drawing every random choice from crypto.getRandomValues() with rejection sampling so all orders are equally likely, then deals the shuffled names round-robin into the teams. Dealing is what keeps sizes balanced: team sizes can never differ by more than one. Finally the team order itself is shuffled, so with uneven numbers it isn’t always Team 1 that gets the extra person.
We ran the tool’s own functions on October 14, 2026. For every list length from 2 to 60 and every possible number of teams (1,770 combinations), each person was placed exactly once and sizes never differed by more than one (0 failures). Then we split 16 people into 4 teams 100,000 times and counted how often each of the other 15 shared a team with one chosen player: between 19.72% and 20.23% each, against an exact 20% (chi-square 13.73 on 14 degrees of freedom, under the 23.68 cut-off for 5%).
Tips
For pairs, choose at most 2 people per team; with an odd number of people one team gets three. For games with a fixed team size, use people per team so no team grows past it. To pick one person rather than split everyone, the Wheel Spinner draws from the same kind of list with the same fair random source.
