How AI Text Detection Works
AI text detectors look for patterns that distinguish machine-generated writing from human writing. Understanding these patterns helps you write more naturally — whether you are editing AI drafts or simply want to improve your own style.

1. How AI Text Detection Works
AI detectors analyze statistical properties of text that differ between human and machine writing. ML-based detectors measure perplexity (how predictable each word is) and burstiness (variation in complexity). Heuristic detectors look for known patterns like sentence uniformity, vocabulary diversity, and overused phrases.
No approach is foolproof. Human writing can look AI-like (formal academic papers) and AI text can look human (after editing). Detection is probabilistic, not binary.
2. What Makes AI Text Detectable
Sentence length uniformity
AI models tend to produce sentences of similar length — typically 15-25 words. Human writing is much more variable: a 3-word sentence followed by a 40-word one. This ‘burstiness’ is one of the strongest signals of human writing.

Measured by Type-Token Ratio (unique words / total words), AI text tends to reuse the same words more than humans do. Human writers use synonyms, slang, technical jargon, and creative word choices that AI models smooth out.
Formulaic phrases
Phrases like ‘it is important to note,’ ‘delve into,’ ‘in today’s world,’ ‘furthermore,’ and ‘leverage the’ appear far more frequently in AI text than in human writing. These are statistical artifacts of training data.
Transition word density
AI text overuses connective words: however, therefore, furthermore, moreover, additionally, consequently. Human writers connect ideas through structure and context rather than explicit connectors.
3. How to Write More Naturally
- Vary sentence length deliberately: Follow a long, complex sentence with something short. Like this. Then go long again.
- Use concrete, specific language: Instead of ‘utilize appropriate methodologies,’ say ‘use the right tools.’
- Add personal voice: Questions, opinions, asides, and self-corrections are distinctly human. AI rarely asks rhetorical questions mid-paragraph.
- Cut formulaic transitions: Not every paragraph needs ‘Furthermore’ or ‘In conclusion.’ Let ideas flow naturally.
- Include imperfections: Occasional sentence fragments. Starting with ‘And’ or ‘But.’ Parenthetical asides (like this one). These are markers of authentic voice.
4. Important Limitations
AI detection should never be used as the sole basis for academic dishonesty accusations. False positives are common, especially for non-native English speakers, formal writers, and people who naturally write in a structured style. These tools are indicators, not verdicts.
